“Want to serve as the school’s SAT/ACT coordinator? It pays $25 per hour.” Yes!
“Want to write curriculum for U.S. history? The stipend is $800.” Yes!
“Want to tutor after school for government? It pays $25 per hour.” Yes!
“Want to teach summer school? It pays $35 per hour.” Yes!
“Want to write exam questions? It pays $30 per question.” Yes!
“Want to attend an evening staff development? It pays $25 per hour.” Yes!
“Want to come in to tutor for AP exams Saturday mornings? It pays $25 per hour.” Yes!
“Want to sponsor the freshman class? The stipend is $6oo.” Yes!
“Want to mentor a new teacher? The stipend is $450.” Yes!
“Want to read AP tests? The stipend is $1600.” Yes!
These are all positions I have said YES! to over the years to earn extra money to pay off debt, sometimes to the point of be ridiculously over-scheduled. And I am incredibly grateful that these opportunities have been available to me, otherwise there’s no way that I would have been able to make the kind of financial progress that I have.
But someday, it will be really nice not to have to say YES! Someday, it will be nice to just say YES! to the things I want to do (like reading AP tests and writing exam questions) and politely say NO! to the things I don’t want to do (SAT/ACT tutoring).
