The Luck of the Irish: Battling the High Cost of Car Insurance in Northern Ireland

May 29, 2013

The following is a guest post

Are you considering a move to Northern Ireland in the near future, or perhaps an extended holiday? Well so you should. Northern Ireland is a country bursting with natural beauty. Nonetheless you should be aware of the fact that car insurance in Northern Ireland can differ considerably from other parts of the world. Unfortunately too, the main distinction is the higher cost. But don’t let this bother you. For there are still ways of attaining car insurance relatively cheap if you do your homework and apply yourself.

Why Does It Cost So Much?

On average, the total cost of car insurance per year in Northern Ireland is roughly £300 (around $450) more expensive than the United Kingdom, which is particularly frustrating for those moving across from England, Scotland and Wales. And the reason for this higher cost seems largely to do with the size of the market. In Northern Ireland the market is fairly small. Therefore as there aren’t as many consumers as more populated countries, naturally, there aren’t as many insurance providers. The result of this is that insurance companies do not feel the same need to compete with each other in order to secure ongoing business from consumers. It has also been suggested that total number of insurance claims in Northern Ireland (both legitimate and fraudulent) is higher than anywhere else in the world. This more than likely has a substantial bearing on the overall cost of insurance in the country.

What Can I Do About It?

Fair enough, you might say. But what can I actually do about it? Fortunately the fact that car insurance in generally more expensive in Northern Ireland than other countries does not resign you to a situation where you are forced to pay an arm and a leg for your car insurance. As with insurance in all countries, there are ways you can minimise the cost by applying yourself in the right manner. Of course the first thing to do is to shop around as much as possible. A very good place to start is Car Insurance Northern Ireland @ Autoline. They more often than not have the most competitive prices available.

However, if you fail to find the best possible deal there, it is also worth investigating the many car insurance price comparison sites. These will give you the best prices from all available insurance companies including Autoline, Geico, and Nationwide. Besides shopping around, you need to be aware that other factors to do with your car itself can substantially affect your overall insurance costs. Installing approved security devices will definitely reduce the cost of your premium. Customising your car will do the opposite. But whatever you do, never lie on an insurance form. If you do ever need to file a claim, insurance companies will always check your details in order to avoid paying out. If you’ve lied, you may as well throw your insurance policy in the trash.
