Below my apartment building is a little convenience store (which is really convenient, ha!). It sells soda, beer, and a few other basics. It also – shocker – has an ATM machine because they don’t accept credit cards for purchases under $10.
Last week I was in the world’s most convenient store buying a couple bags of M&Ms as prizes for my students. There was a woman in front of me buying ketchup and orange juice. She apparently didn’t know about the credit card minimum. When the cashier refused her card, she happily marched over to the ATM to withdraw some cash.
Let’s just assume that the ATM fee is $2 and that her bank’s fee for using an alien ATM is $2. That woman just spent $4 on absolutely nothing. She would have been way better off buying a few rolls of toilet paper (or some other necessity) to bump her total up to the $10 mark than wasting $4 on stupid fees. I wanted to jump between her and the ATM to stop her from making such a dumb decision.
What are people thinking?!
