I have a long weekend this weekend (hooray!), and, aside from a few school-related things that need to be done for Monday and seeing a few friends, I’m planning on just relaxing and reading my book. I’m seriously broke until payday next Friday, but I don’t think I’ll have too much trouble getting there since I don’t have any big plans.
I’ve been crunching some numbers, trying to figure out what’s realistic in terms of savings before the end of the year and beyond. I need to pull $65 from my Freedom Fund to pay for this year’s contact lenses, so that leaves me at $900 for right now. Another $200 will go into savings automatically ($100 for November and $100 for December) so that puts me at $1100. I’m running a tutoring program in November that will probably end up paying $250 after taxes, so that puts me at $1350. January is a 3 paycheck month for me, but I’m going to need some of that to finance the holiday season. The worst case scenario is that I end up with $500 left from the extra check; that’ll put my savings at $1850, plus my normal January savings of $100 is $1950. By my birthday in February, I’ll have $2050, which is awesome. Hopefully it will be even higher than this because I’ll funnel my Christmas money (~$300) into savings and won’t have to spend over $500 on Christmas travel and gifts, which means that more of that 3rd check will make it into savings.
I think my #1 financial goal for 2010 will be to grow my Freedom Fund. Ultimately, I’d like to have it around $6000 by then end of next year, which shouldn’t be too much of a stretch when I factor in the scenario above, plus my tutoring money for the rest of the year, and summer school money. I think I’m going to set some quarterly benchmarks (like, I need to have X amount in my April 30, X amount by August 30, etc.) to help me get to whatever final number I settle on as my ultimate goal.
Other than thinking about savings, not much is new in my financial world. My grocery spending has been down significantly, due mostly to limiting trips to the store and being more thoughtful about how to use leftovers to create new meals. Maybe I’ll think about writing some posts about my food spending and recipes…
I think I’m going to just pull out some blankets and lounge the rest of this rainy weekend away 🙂
