School is definitely winding down; this week and the next two weeks are Maryland’s high school testing weeks, so class time is low key. The unspoken “rule” is that no real teaching is done during testing weeks so that the kids can relax a little bit. I have mixed feelings about this, but it is nice to just relax a little bit with my students – my classes are usually pretty hard! My U.S. history students are watching A League of Their Own. I’m really surprised at how much they like it – it’s one of my favorite movies! Especially nice is getting to chat with my first period AP students; they’re all seniors, so we get to talk about college and work and family – they’re a fantastic group of kids and I’m so proud of how hard they’ve all worked this year. They took their AP test last Friday and said they felt very well-prepared. That kind of made me smile 🙂
Anyway, we’re celebrating T’s birthday this weekend, so there will be some spending involved. We’re definitely going to a Nationals game, but he also wants to go up to Baltimore on Monday for an Orioles game. I’d also like to take him to a nice dinner at some point this weekend. I’m not too worried about the money because I found out that I’m getting the stipend money from one of my tutoring programs on June 5. It’ll probably be about $650; I’m going to save about half of it and use some of it to pay for this weekend, too. June 5 will be a big day – it’s personal loan payoff day and stipend day! Woo hoo!
Since my after-school programs have wrapped up for the year and we’re moving towards low-key summer school, I’ve been thinking about some of the things I’d like to do that I don’t have time for during the school year. I found a great place to take an adult ballet class, and I’d also like to get back into some of the artsy-craftsy stuff I like to do. Nothing too expensive, but these will consume some cash. I’m okay with that, though. By the end of the summer my savings will have been built up substantially and I’ll be out of consumer debt. I want to stop being so obsessive with money and enjoy my income a little bit.
I’ll have an update about my TV saga soon!
